Atop the great tower of the palace of Ethnigon, a small boy clambered out of a window and onto the ledge running around the building. He moved to the edge of the outer wall and clambered onto the gargoyle below him.
His father was in a drunken rage again tonight. The stone corridors and arched windows rang with echoes of his mad ravings. Little Evan, the kings son, listened to the old ruler from the roof.
More and more these days, Evan found himself sitting on the same gargoyle that he could reach through an open window on the top floor, overlooking the entire east side of the city.

In the hazy and indistinct time it took to shift from unconsciousness to waking, Hunter became aware that his cell phone must have been ringing for quite a while, as its sharp, incessant tones were already bored into his skull.
With much mumbling and bleariness he sat up to wipe the crust from his eyes and switch the lamp on so he could grab the thing and throttle it quiet. After a few seconds sleep was forgotten and he was sat with the phone to his ear.
